This program adapts the existing Fishermen First Aid and Safety Training created by a team at Oregon State University into a day-long training tailored to the needs of commercial fishermen in the Southeast and Gulf Coast regions of the United States. Funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and in partnership with UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant, we will adapt the content, pilot test it with small groups of fishermen, and then launch the complete training within the state of Georgia. The next steps are to ground truth the training content for acceptability in other parts of the regions and then train existing first aid and safety instructors to deliver the Southeast and Gulf Coast Fishermen First Aid and Safety Training (SGC-FFAST) program. Training commercial fishermen in first aid and safety not only complies with US Coast Guard regulations, it also helps to mitigate injuries and fatalities among workers in one of the most dangerous occupations in the US.
